In an even longer streak, she was the No. 1 women's skier in the downhill for eight years, from the 2007/2008 season to 2015/2016. She finished third in the super-G earlier in the Games.

Vonn was considered the favorite to win Wednesday.

Since the heroics in 1980, Olympic medals have proved frustratingly hard to come by for the USA, which has reached the final only twice in the intervening 38 years, with both appearances coming after the National Hockey League first allowed its players to compete in 1998. The U.S. beat Finland 5-0, and Canada beat the Russians 5-0.

They are in the final two heats of the bobsleigh and will be an outside bet for a medal.

Montella has joked that Sevilla may have to resort to crude tactics to stop him. He wasn't allowed to finish training yesterday because we wanted to save him.

Goggia posted a run time of 1:39.22 as the fifth skier down the hill and nobody, including Vonn, who was the seventh starter, could match the 25-year-old's time over the rest of the 39-woman field.

Goggia was fifth out of the starting gate, and turned in a near flawless run.

After a goalless first 20 minutes, second-period strikes from Ryan Donato, James Wisniewski and Mark Arcobello saw the US race into a 3-0 lead against a side it had beaten 2-1 in the group stage last week. Because I wouldn't be the same person that I am today.
