Only the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts remained with head coaching vacancies on Super Sunday, though the expectation had always been that New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would take over in Indy while Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia would be the guy in Detroit.

Patricia has coached on both defense and offense for the Patriots since joining the franchise in 2004 and leaves a day after losing Super Bowl LII to the Philadelphia Eagles.

If Patriots owner Bob Kraft sweetened the deal for McDaniels to stay as coordinator, it's worth at least wondering if he ever attempted it with Patricia, who was the Patriots defensive coordinator.

For weeks, Matt Patricia had been expected to be named the head coach of the once the ' season ended. Despite the consistent turnover on his staff, Belichick is the one constant.

Patricia has acknowledged the matter himself, as MLive's Kyle Meinke reported Tuesday that as he began his Super Bowl media session, Patricia jokingly asked "You guys got a lot of Philadelphia Eagles questions, right?" Just a great coach. "Any team would want him to be the leader of the organisation", Pats quarterback Tom Brady said of McDaniels. Following a stop in St. Louis as the Rams coordinator in 2011, he returned to New England in 2012.

The new head coach has reportedly already made significant changes to the staff.
