Beyonce's father and former manager recently commented on about race and music of his famous daughter Beyonce and claimed that the only reason she's so successful is because of her "light skin". If she were darker, would she have gotten the chance to showcase her talents to the world?

In an exclusive interview with Ebony.com, Mathew Knowles asserted that the light complexions of his daughters Beyoncé and Solange helped boost their music careers. In the deep South in the '50s, '60s and '70s, the shade of your Blackness was considered important. The lighter your skin, the straighter your nose, etc., the more lovely you're perceived to be. He said that his own mother used derogatory terms about dark-skinned women and encouraged him to date white women.

When he met Tina Knowles-Lawson, she appeared white to him, he said, which is why he began dating and eventually married her.

"I have a chapter in the book that talks about eroticised rage".

"When I was growing up, my mother used to say, 'Don't ever bring no nappy-head black girl to my house, '" Knowles told Ebony. "There are a lot of black men of my era that are not aware of this thing". "Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids, and what do they all have in common?"

When prodded by host Harvey Levin, who couldn't seem to grasp the concept of racism in the music industry ("If there's genuine racism, they wouldn't play black music at all", Levin theorized.), Mathew agreed that L'Oreal lightening Beyonce's skin in advertisements, and early photos of Whitney Houston with lighter skin, are just two examples of the colorism issue.

In her 2013 documentary Life Is But A Dream Beyonce said it was "difficult" period but concluded they both "knew it was time".

In the scene, a music producer named Young Hollywood grills Afro-Latina singer Amara La Negra about her appearance.

He said he initially thought Tina was white. At one point he called her a "Nutella Queen", comparing the colour of her skin to the chocolate-hazelnut dessert spread.
