Since 2012, meanwhile, Google has allowed people to block specific ads they don't want to see; a year ago alone, user recommendations prompted Google to remove 1 million ads from its ad network. Finally, Google says Mute This Ad will begin to appear in "even more places" as they expand the tool across more apps and websites over time.

Google will soon relieve users from one of the most insufferable annoyances, part-and-parcel of online shopping - the pushy reminder ads. This update has two big components, with Google rolling out the ability to mute reminder ads through your Ad Settings and making general improvements to its "Mute This Ad" feature at the same time.

Google is letting you mute those super annoying ads that stalk you around the web.

Essentially, reminder ads are used in an attempt to get you to return to a particular website where you've started - but not completed - a transaction. On top of that, Google is expanding Mute This Ad to work across more apps and websites that it partners with.

Google, the largest online ad network and also the company that owns the browser that most people use to look at websites, has had enough. It's a temporary solution - the muting only lasts 90 days - but since that's substantially longer than most reminder ads stick around for, there's a pretty good chance you won't see them again. Once the user adjusts the required settings, the reminder ads would be removed from the company's entire domain, notes VentureBeat. Users will be able view information about the reminder ads, and control which advertisers are allowed to show them the ads.
