Bus fare hike in TN draws flak from political parties

The Tamilnadu government last night hiked the fares of buses under State run transport corporations and private entities approximately by 20 to 54.54 per cent, after a six year gap, saying it was inevitable.

Effective Saturday, the fare has been hiked for buses across categories viz moffusil, city, ordinary, express, deluxe, bypass-non-stop, ultra deluxe, airconditioned and Volvo modes, an official release said. A wage labourer, who takes a bus from T Nagar depot said: " It is too hard for me to spend more to commute. This is the second time that the bus fares have been revised in the State since 2001.

While announcing the fare hike, the government had said its transport corporations incurred a recurring loss of '20,488 crore. He said Omni bus operators already charge higher fares and that they planned to further increase it.

Speaking to the media at Madurai Aiport, the BJP state president Tamilisai Soundrarajan stated, "The bus fare was revised without any notification and this is affecting the people. I urge this horse-traded & "commission agent" govt to immediately roll it back". The last revision was undertaken by the AIADMK government in November 2011. The CPIM (M) also announced that it would stage a dharna and hold protestdemonstration on January 22 denouncing the steep hike and the PMK onJanuary 25. "The government has burdened the people with this fare hike while giving the extremely poor MLAs a hundred per cent salary rise", he said in a statement.

The hike was to facilitate profiteering by private operators, he alleged.

Still, the fares were the cheapest among all the southern states even after this hike, he told reporters at his native Karur.

While the mofussil fare for a distance of 10 km has been increased by one rupee in ordinary service, the fare for 30 km distance has been hiked from Rs. 17 to Rs. 24 in the express/semi-deluxe service category.

In town buses the fare has been hiked from a minimum of Rs 3 to Rs 5 and the maximum from Rs 12 to Rs 19.
