Franken announced his plan to resign last month after a swirl of sexual misconduct allegations.

Tina Smith has no time to waste as she prepares for the U.S. Senate and a November election to keep her new job.

"The visits that I'm doing today and tomorrow are really focused on economic development and creating opportunity for Minnesotans", said Smith.

Smith's resignation as lieutenant governor took effect at midnight Tuesday. "I know that she will be a superb senator, representing the best interests of our state and our citizens".

People packed into Hoops Brewing in Canal Park to hear Smith speak and for a chance to meet and talk to her about what's important to them.

"I'm ready to work", said Smith."We have great opportunities in this state and we have so much more work to make sure that those opportunities are broadly shared".

If God is involved, Michele Bachmann could be elected US senator from Minnesota - so says the head of a Messianic Jewish ministry based in that state. With the help of Franken's staff, that's exactly what she plans on doing.

Franken, who had apologised for any offence he may have given and had offered to undergo an ethics investigation by the Senate, has been one of the most popular Democratic senators and his name had begun to be heard in discussions about a possible presidential run in 2020. Smith is to sworn in for her position in the Senate, on 3rd January, after Franken officially leaves his seat. With a GOP majority across Washington she says she realizes it will be hard to accomplish certain things.

And can we depend on Smith to be an equally passionate champion of the women's and reproductive rights she's been affiliated with in her past?

"I think that R.T. Rybak said this about her, she's the velvet hammer", Klobuchar said. She's also set to present a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol to Hibbing Fire Chief Erik Jankila, in honor of retired Hibbing Fire Capt. Steven Gillitzer, who died in a December 26 fire along with his wife and two of his grandsons; Gillitzer rescued another grandson and died while attempting to save the others.

Saturday, Smith will also be making a number of appearances in the area, including on the Iron Range.
