The leader of Britain's eurosceptic UK Independence Party faced calls on Sunday to stand down after a newspaper published racist messages sent by his girlfriend about Prince Harry's fiancee Meghan Markle.

The 54-year-old Ukip leader left his 42-year-old wife after he met Marney shortly before Christmas.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Marney allegedly made a string of explosively racist remarks about Prince Harry's fiancée, claiming the black actress's entry into the Royal Family would "pave the way for a black king".

Ms Marney later apologised "unreservedly" for the "shocking language" she used in the messages.

In the wake of the controversy, former Ukip leadership candidate Ben Walker has called for Mr Bolton to resign, accusing him of having "deeply flawed judgement".

In a statement last night Ukip chairman Paul Oakden said: "In light of messages that have been brought to my attention, I have taken the decision to immediately suspend her party membership pending an investigation".

Peter Whittle, leader of Ukip's delegation in the London Assembly, also called for Ms Marney to be "expelled altogether" for the "disgraceful remarks". "Ukip does not, has not and will never condone racism", he said. Bolton's may also be suspended from Ukip following a series of investigations.

She added: "The opinions I expressed were deliberately exaggerated in order to make a point and have, to an extent, been taken out of context".

The pair's relationship became public earlier this month after the Ukip leader confirmed that he had changed his "relationship status" in recent weeks.

Bolton is set to face a crunch meeting over his future as Ukip's National Executive Committee will convene on Thursday to decide his fate. "Yet I fully recognized the offense they have caused", she said.

Bolton is the third elected leader of UKIP since Nigel Farage resigned after helping secure a vote to leave European Union in June 2016, and the party has struggled to find a role.

The 25-year-old, who describes herself as a model, actor, journalist and Brexiteer on her Twitter profile, also reportedly said Ms Markle had a "tiny brain" and that black people were ugly.
