On assertion by the four judges that they were raising these issues for survival of democracy, Rahul said as the issue raised by four judges are extremely disturbing and have far-reaching consequences for sacred values of the country.

He demanded that the Justice BH Loya death case, the immediate trigger for the judges' outburst, should be heard by the highest level of the Supreme Court. Supreme Court judges are saying the court is not in order.

Earlier in the day, four Supreme Court judges called a hurried press conference where they publicly criticised Chief Justice Misra over distribution of cases and raised concerns about judicial appointments, in an unprecedented public airing of problems. "#DemocracyInDanger", the Congress' official twitter handle said.

Speaking on behalf of the four judges, Justice Chelameswar lamented over the corrosion and compromise taking place within the institution of the judiciary and especially within the portals of the Supreme Court.

Former Finance Minister and veteran BJP leader Yashwant Sinha on Saturday said it is "our bounden duty to take note of what the judges have said". Party leaders said that it is not surprising that the Congress is supporting the dissenting judges against the CJI, as it may not have liked certain decisions of the SC like reopening of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases.

"This merits a thorough, proper investigation and understanding of how independence and integrity of judiciary is being interfered or is being affected, which is impermissible in a secular democratic republic", Yechury said. We must respect them. "When four top judges are sharing their concern with the members of the media, how can this be an internal matter?"

Sinha also defended CPI leader D. Raja's visit to Justice Jasti Chelameswar's house. "I think Congress should know that", he added. "If political parties, or anyone concerned about the future of democracy in the country, don't take note of this, we fail in our national duty".
