Ohio Valley schools honored for high graduation rates

The school also had 13 of its 15 special education students earn a diploma last spring, while two other students received a certificate of completion, which isn't considered as an official high school diploma and counts against a school's graduation rate.

High graduation rates in West Virginia high schools are being noticed. Several statewide initiatives contributed to the steady increase in the graduation rate.

"Our state becomes stronger with each student that graduates high school, college- and career-ready", Paine said. In 2016, the waiver graduation rate was 89.07 percent with a non-waiver graduation rate of 82.36 percent.

"It's obviously an accomplishment for our school and community" PikeView High School Principal Mark Godfrey said.

Four local high schools were among the rankings of over sixty schools that had a 90 percent or higher graduation rate within the state of West Virginia. "Eight schools graduated more than 90% of their students".

Of the 68 schools recognized, three schools achieved a graduation rate of 100 percent.

"There's always an overall picture that goes into a graduation rate on how did we get to that number", he said. That drop coincided with a 17-percent increase in the overall number of ELL students in Indiana's public schools. Beech Grove Schools, which enrolls just over 3,000 students, made the biggest jump of any district in the county, increasing 8 percentage points to 95 percent.

At the district level, Franklin Township had the highest graduation rate (97 percent). That's a 6-point increase from 2016, and a 35-point increase over the past 10 years. "The high schools here today are celebrated for the hard work of the principals, educators, counselors, students and parents who understand the important step graduation is in a child's future".

The biggest change was among students who are learning English as a new language.
