Magnitude 7.3 quake hits near coast of Peru, triggering tsunami threat

A 7.1-magnitude natural disaster rocked Peru, on January 14, 2018, at 6:55 a.m. ET, and killed at least two people, according to a governor in the region.

At least 65 people have been injured in the cities of Arequipa, Ica and Ayacucho, also in southern Peru, the National Civil Defense Institute reported.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.1 quake struck shortly before 4:30 AM about 500 kilometers south of the capital, Lima.

The Governor of Arequipa, Yamila Osorio, posted on Twitter that there were multiple people in Chala, Caraveli Province who suffered minor harm in addition to some structural damage and landslides occurred, AccuWeather reported.

The powerful tremor caused homes and roads to collapse and left several municipalities without power.

Peruvian maritime authorities said the quake did not produce a tsunami on the Peruvian coast.

Earthquakes are common in Peru, but many homes are built with precarious materials that can not withstand them.

Peru is the world's number 2 copper producer, although numerous mines in the south are located far inland from the coastal region where the quake struck. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
