Cannes Elects Cate Blanchett to Steer Jury at a Crucial Moment

The Australian actress is the 12th woman to lead the prestigious panel at Cannes, which will take place from 8-19 May 2018. Though it often features movies that go on to relative arthouse obscurity, in recent years the festival has unveiled many top prestige titles. She succeeds Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, who presided over the jury past year for the festival's 70th edition and awarded the prestigious Palme d'or to The Square by Swedish director Ruben Östlund.

This choice, logical both from an artistic and media point of view, can also be interpreted as festival's will to support fight against sexual harassment in profession, after scandal of producer Harvey Weinstein has Shaken Hollywood industry Blanchett was one of first famous to be publicly positioned against Weinstein, accused since October 5 of sexual assaults and rapes by more than a hundred women.

More recently, she joined the Time's Up initiative alongside other high-profile actresses including Reese Witherspoon and Emma Stone.

The Oscar-winning actress will follow in the footsteps of director Pedro Almodovar and head up the jury of the 71st annual festival in May (18). In a statement, the actress said she was "humbled by the privilege and responsibility" of presiding over the festival.

In a joint statement, they added: "Our conversations this autumn convince us she will be a committed president, and a passionate and generous spectator".
