Trump Cancels Visit To London, Blames Obama For 'Bad' Embassy Deal

The cancellation of the visit was "excellent news", said Lindsey German, organizer of the Stop the War Coalition, which had planned a large protest against Trump.

Donald Trump will not be visiting London in February for the opening of the new embassy building, according to reports.

But writing on Twitter, the United States president said he thought the embassy's move was a "bad deal" and would not visit arguably America's closest ally - long considered to to have a "special relationship" with Washington.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "As we've said a number of times, a state visit invitation has been extended and accepted, and we will confirm the details in due course".

Mr. Trump has already visited France, Poland, Japan, and China as US president, with little or no protest or opposition.

Prime Minister Theresa May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump after his inauguration in January a year ago, and they were filmed emerging from the White House holding hands.

Some British lawmakers questioned whether Trump would be welcome after he re-tweeted videos from a far-right British group and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan following a terror attack previous year.

He said Trump's visit "would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests".

President Trump has a knack for hitting hard with the truth.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a frequent sparring opponent for Trump, echoed that protests were the real reason Trump cancelled the visit. "And you got the message".

In a BBC interview on Sunday, May insisted that Trump "will be coming to this country" in spite of the opposition. "But maybe, just maybe, Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn, and the Labour party planning mass protests, those optics, he didn't like the look of". Foreign heads of state should not automatically expect an invitation to the wedding, he added.

Trump's decision to abandon a visit altogether represents something of a victory for Khan, who has been feuding publicly with Trump since 2015.

The new building will open for business on January 16.

The project also received an influx of cash from the sale of the old embassy to a Qatari investment fund in 2009, with the reported price of 500 million pounds, or about $800 million.

However, Mr Trump blamed former president Mr Obama's administration for selling "perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for peanuts".

Moreover, the embassy in Grosvenor Square was not outright owned by the U.S. government, but instead had a 999-year lease on the land from the Duke of Westminster, who owns 300 acres of land in central London, including most of Belgravia and Mayfair. The new building is also larger and more energy efficient. We will be going to London.

Although the decision was not made under Obama, Trump is correct to say that the sale of the embassy was completed during the Obama administration.
