Samsung Unveil 146-inch Modular 4K TV in Las Vegas

But the output is the most varied for years - with each player pushing completely different technologies and Samsung stealing most of the headlines with a 146-inch wall based TV.

The technology will eventually allow for so-called wallpaper screens, which are displays that cover an entire wall of any shape or size, said James McQuivey, a Forrester analyst. According to Samsung: "Users can add or remove modules to make their TV bigger or smaller, in any configuration, removing previous limitations on screen size, with zero impact on the performance of the display". But now its latest - and much larger - display can roll up, too.

More impressive, though, is the fact that Samsung's set is modular. It's probably still a niche technology, but it is interesting. In the long term, analysts in the industry see microLEDs eventually win over OLEDs and QLEDs, but for now microLED TVs would be a costly proposition.

Because each LED can turn on or off individually, MicroLED has the potential for infinite contrast, just like OLED TVs. While LG has yet to release more details to its TV it did reveal that the key to its roll-up design is the fact that it doesn't need backlight to run. What's more, unlike OLEDs, MicroLEDs can potentially go brighter and exhibit immunity to ageing and burn in issues. In this age of AI and machine learning, the company has just made one of its TVs a whole lot smarter, if the company is to be believed.

The QLED TV will feature twice the resolution of current top model televisions, and Samsung Australia television product manager Hass Mahdi said the screen would use artificial intelligence to automatically upscale shows to appear in crisp 8K resolution.

LG's new TVs are the first to have Google Assistant entirely built in.

What's important, then, is the upscaling technology, which can take content of any resolution and upscale it to an 8K resolution.

The TV extends AI and machine learning to sound as well, to identify the source and distinguish between a movie and football match to optimise the sound output accordingly. The AI engine is also touted to learn as it works to improve its capability over time.

As yet it isn't clear when it will be launched although an announcement is expected in the forthcoming weeks.
