Rajasthan HC wants to watch Padmavat before quashing FIR against Bhansali

The HC, which was hearing a petition by Bhansali seeking to quash the FIR, posted the matter for January 23.

Padmavat, which stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles, was planned to be released on December 1, 2017. An FIR was lodged by two persons - Virendra Singh and Nagpal Singh - with the Deedwana police in Nagaur district of Rajasthan in March previous year, alleging that the film had distorted "historical facts" and "hurt the image of Rani Padmini".

Justice Sandeep Mehta, however, refused to pass any order on the petition before watching the film and asked the petitioner's counsel to arrange a screening for the court.

Bhansali had then approached the High Court for quashing of the FIR with the court subsequently staying the police investigation. The director's consent is necessary for the screening of the film.

On this, the court said that since allegations of wrong scenes and tampering with history in this movie have been made in the FIR, the court can not cancel this FIR without watching the film. Rajasthan government has already announced that it will not allow screening of the film in the state despite CBFC clearance.

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena also demanded changes in the names of the characters days after the CBFC suggested changing the film's title to Padmavat, after Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic poem of the same name on which it is based. Despite some Rajput organizations warning of creating a ruckus if the movie ever releases, Sanjay Bhansali seems to be keen on releasing "Padmavat" on February 9. The film is slated for release on January 25. In a statement, chief minister Vasundhara Raje's office had said that "Queen Padmini's sacrifice is deeply linked to the state's glory and honour, she is not just a figure in history for us but a symbol of our pride".
