Officials confirm 5 flu-related deaths in Houston area this season

Five more people in North Texas have died due to the flu according to health officials. Grey said that around the state there have been 18 flu-associated deaths, 12 in the last week.

"Flu is everywhere in the U.S. right now", Dr. Daniel Jernigan, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's influenza division, said during a media briefing Friday. However, those are only cases confirmed by a lab.

However, since the county confirmed its first flu death, authorities have performed a review of death certificates that goes back to December 10, McDowell said.

Hospitals in the Carolinas HealthCare System and in the Triad area have announced safeguards created to prevent the spread of the flu, including are telling children 12 years old and younger not to visit patients. Even if the flu season is already in full swing, it is never too late to receive flu shots. The most recent hospitalization rate for flu was 22.7 per 100,000 people, up from 13.7 per 100,000 last week. They include headaches, runny eyes and nose, fever, chills and body aches, according to Grey and Garcia.

"Every week shows a little more of an increase of influenza across the state", Dr. William Berg, director of the Peninsula Health District, said.

"The levels of illness we are seeing are still well within the normal range for what we see in a typical flu season", said Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health for Nova Scotia. Because the flu is so bad this season, Chen says health professionals are doing things a bit differently this year. "Staying home when you are sick and practicing good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands helps stop the spread of germs and prevents respiratory illnesses like the flu".

Doctors and health officials continue to recommend parents to have flu shots administered to their children. Get an annual flu shot, cover coughs and sneezes with the crook of the arm, wash hands with warm soap and water, and stay home if sick.
