MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews joked about giving Hillary Clinton a "Bill Cosby pill" before interviewing her in footage from January 2016 obtained by the Cut.

Outtake footage obtained by the website The Cut showed Matthews in an Iowa fire station, asking if he could "have some of the queen's waters". Precious waters?' asks Matthews at the top of the tape, putting on a posh accent as he is handed a bottle of water that had been set aisde for Clinton. While he's waiting for the water, he quips, "Where's that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?".

The footage ends with Matthews looking pleased with the witticism he unleashed on his staff.

Cosby has been accused by scores of women of sexual assault - often with the use of date-rape pills.

The MSNBC anchor has apologized for making the crude joke, placing some of the blame on the "Cosby-fever" that was sweeping the nation way back in 2016.

"This was a awful comment I made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines", Matthews said to the Cut.
