Korea qualifies for figure skating team event at PyeongChang Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIII Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, is a major worldwide multi-sport event scheduled to take place in PyeongChang County.

It comes a day after South Korea's vice sports minister Roh Tae-Kang said the South had proposed marching with North Korea at the Olympics' opening ceremony and also forming a joint women's ice hockey team during the high-level talks which took place on Tuesday.

A senior South Korean official said on Friday that Seoul is seeking to form a joint women's ice hockey team with North Korea to participate in next month's Winter Olympics being hosted by the South.

The two Koreas, who are still technically at war, marched together at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Games and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. The International Olympic Committee is expected to extend several "wild card" spots to North Korean athletes so they can compete at the Olympics without qualifying, but it's not known if that would apply to individual athletes or an entire team. Only two North Korean athletes, figure skating pair Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik, qualified for Pyeongchang, but they subsequently missed a deadline to register.

Jarrod Agen, Pence's deputy chief of staff, said Pence would travel to the Olympics "to reinforce the strong US presence on the Korean Peninsula and send a clear message of American resolve to the North Korean regime".

"Even if we have one Korean team in women's hockey, we'll make sure it will not come at the expense of South Korean players", he said, according to Yonhap. South Korea are grouped with Sweden, Switzerland and Japan in the women's tournament.
