CSK, though, are yet to name the third player they will retain as the deadline to submit the list is January 4.

Mumbai: Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday chose to retain former skipper MS Dhoni and teammate Suresh Raina ahead of the player retention event here on Thursday.

Each team can opt for up to five players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM) (during the Player Auction), according to the decision of the IPL GC at its meeting in New Delhi on December 6.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday, January 4 will host the retention event in Bangalore whereas the auction is slated to be held on January 27 & 28.

This time, every team have a chance of retaining three players in maximum. The limit of retaining players, from both the player retention event and the auction event combined, is five. The event, to be staged in Mumbai, will be televised live with owners and mentors and potentially even some of the players to be retained in tow alongside mandarins of the BCCI/IPL and members of the Committee of Administrators.

With Dhoni and Raina confirmed favourite picks, CSK is still mulling over the third choice, with a dearth of options available. CSK and RR, returning to the league after a two-year suspension, will have the option to choose from the players who featured in their teams in 2015 and were part of the replacement teams, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune SuperGiant in season 10.

The minimum spend has been fixed at 75 percent of the salary cap for each season. Kings XI Punjab has said it may retain one player. The money will be deducted from the franchises' auction purse. Should teams decide to retain three players, they will automatically lose Rs 33 crore (15, 11 and 7 respectively), but if one of the three players retained is an uncapped player, he will only cost the franchise Rs 3 crore.

Some retentions are pretty much no-brainers, such as three-time IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma by Mumbai Indians, Virat Kohli by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Dhoni by Chennai. But there are many complexities when it comes to knowing the complete rules of the retention.
