Heathrow Airport squeezes more passengers onto bigger jet planes

Its passenger numbers for the year as a whole were up 5.2 per cent on the year before.

Gatwick attributes the boost to continued growth in its long-haul connections, with new routes to Singapore, Rwanda, Seattle and Denver opening in 2017. Gatwick's long-haul network grew to 63 connections a year ago, with 7.3m people opting to fly long-haul, up almost a million on 2016.

The growth comes despite the airport's seventh biggest airline, Monarch, entering administration in October.

London Gatwick ended 2017 with its busiest December on record, as 3.2 million passengers travelled through the airport during the festive month, an increase of 1.5 per cent year-on-year.

London's Heathrow Airport, which has operated its two runways close to capacity since the start of the decade, managed to squeeze in 2.3 million more passengers past year as airlines deployed bigger planes and carried more people per flight.

In December 2017, excluding Bournemouth, MAG grew 0.7 per cent.

The airport says December 2017 was its busiest on record, with 3.2 million passengers travelling through it - up 1.5 per cent on the same month in 2016.

Stansted Airport chief executive, Ken O'Toole, said: "The a year ago has been a very busy and exciting time at London Stansted with passenger numbers and the range of destinations directly available from the airport both reaching all-time highs". The project will allow us to unlock the full potential of our two runways and provide our passengers with a great customer experience. Primera Air will also launch direct flights to New York, Boston and Toronto from April and May this year.
