There were further reports that after the new passport will come into effect, it will not serve as an address proof anymore.

The last page also contains information such Emigration Check Required (ECR) and old passport number with date and place of issue of that passport.

Currently, the first page of the passport has the photograph, the name of the citizen as well as other details and the address is printed on the last page.

Foreign ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar in a statement on Friday said that the decision comes on the back of the ministry accepting recommendations of a three-member committee comprising officials from the ministry of external affairs and the ministry of women and child development. The committee reviewed the things which said that the name of the father can be removed from the passport.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the next series of passports may have the last page blank as a measure to protects details. The information will still be stored in the system of the MEA, so it will not affect the government.

MEA may start issuing orange-coloured passports for people who are issued ECR to quicken emigration process.

The government on Friday chose to discontinue the last page of the passport, containing information about parents, address, Emigration Check Required (ECR) and old passport details. This includes people who require an emigration check before leaving the country (ECR category). Government officers have a white passport, diplomats have issued red passports and all others are blue.

The MEA is also considering some changes in the colour of passports.

Soon, however, those in the ECR category will have orange passports, Kumar said.

The recommendation - that was accepted by the ministry - suggested that the MEA should "explore" the possibility of "doing away the printing of information contained in the passport booklet such as names of father/legal guardian, mother, spouse, and address contained in the last page of the passport".

All current passports will continue to be valid, even once the new series of passports are issued, up till their expiry date.
