According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the winter weather advisory for Lee County is in effect from 6 6 p.m. Friday.

Rain will change to freezing rain and sleet by late Friday morning and then we'll see a transition to snow by late afternoon and evening.

Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow could impact travel in the Union County area Thursday night and Friday. "We're still expecting 1-3" of rain, that combined with snowmelt will enhance the threat for poor drainage, basement and ice jam flooding. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to an inch are possible, along with ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch, the weather service said.

Heavy snow expected. Plan on hard travel conditions especially for the evening commute.

The precipitation will lighten Saturday and "taper off to light rain through the early evening", said Bill Simpson, a meteorologist with the weather service.

Rain fills in overnight tonight into Friday morning.

So forecasters cautioned that any travel problems that develop today may linger into Saturday.

The cold front dragged Thursday morning's moderate temperatures down quickly to around and below freezing temperatures.

This is a complex system as we have an arctic front moving through this morning, dropping our temperatures. Most of the precipitation will turn over to snow showers by 8 a.m. EST. Ice accumulation may reach a quarter-inch in the region and up to a half inch in some areas (see graphic).

The rain is expected to move into the Kansas City area - starting in the north and then spreading to the south - after midnight Wednesday. "Snow and river ice will be melting and when you add in about.50-1" worth of rain, the flood threat on all rivers will need to be monitored. It will be blustery with a northwest wind gusting as high as 30 miles per hour.

It was the deep freeze during the last week of the month that really lowered the average temperature to levels far below normal. While this doesn't look like a major storm, accumulation is likely and could cause issues. "We could see a brief window of wintry mix late-morning to mid-day hours".
