With reported comments by President Donald Trump inflaming an already-raw immigration debate, the deeply divided Florida House on Friday passed a proposal to ban "sanctuary cities' in the state".

Though the bill received significant support in the Florida House, the measure appears dead in the Senate, which would also need to pass the legislation for it to become law.

Surrounded by House Democrats, Representative Al Jacquet made an impassioned plea for Republicans to consider possible unintended consequences.

The sanctuary bill, HB 9, allows the state to impose fines of up to $5,000 on city council members who approve sanctuary policies or refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials.

The sponsor of Florida's bill anticipates legal challenges if it becomes law.

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Naples, said Trump's statements were "out of bounds", but he said the bill is about following federal immigration law.
