Arlington MLK parade denied permit over funding failure

City Manager Trey Yelverton said the city has "been accommodating and there was a final request and that request was not fulfilled". Day parade in North Texas has been canceled just days after groups threatened to boycott the event because Gov. Greg Abbott was chosen as honorary grand marshal.

Event organizers are required to pay for security and logistics-related funding based on the size of the event, Warren said. "As we review his career and public service, it is fair to say that Greg Abbott has done more to damage and undermine African-American and Latino civil and voter rights, educational opportunities and economic empowerment than any other modern-day Texas governor".

"We were concerned about what this looked like, the black eye it would give the community to have the NAACP protesting an event named after Martin Luther King on Martin Luther King Day", she said. Since the permit was denied, concerns have died down, but Warren said the city would need to plan for that contingency if they approve the appeal.

"So this didn't come about until every news station in the Metroplex covered this, and if every station in the Metroplex didn't cover this, I don't think we would be here", Hood said.

Organizers appealed the denial of the permit Friday, but were denied again. "That's probably two steps ahead of where the process is right now".

"NAACP protesting something with MLK in the name of it on MLK day?"
