Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is now available to all users

For users of older versions of Windows 10, Microsoft will now display a notification explaining that a new important update is available. With a strong emphasis on bringing Mixed Reality experiences to the masses, the Fall Creators Update has now reached full availability.

When a new feature update is released, we begin by targeting a select set of devices that we believe will have the best update experience based on device characteristics and testing done by us and our device partners.

The announcement came slightly short of three months after the October 17, 2017, debut of Fall Creators Update, better known to corporate customers as 1709 in Microsoft's yymm nomenclature.

Microsoft also touted the relatively quick adoption rate of the Fall Creators Update, which has now reached more than 100 million devices.

Side note: I - still - can't update one machine running the Creators Update to the Fall Creators Update.

Microsoft plans to release the next feature update for Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1803, around March/April of 2018.

Windows 10 Pro- and Windows 10 Enterprise-powered systems that rely on the consumer-grade Windows Update for servicing will be automatically offered 1709 beginning January 18.

The update was released to home users in October previous year, and after several months of testing and further patches, Microsoft has certified the major feature update as ready for release via a Windows update channel used by enterprise. During that time Microsoft recommends that IT admins test the update on a limited number of machines, to prepare for a wider rollout.

I suggest that you create a full system backup before you install the update. Users with Windows 7 or 8.1 product keys may still upgrade to Windows 10 for free. If you've already scheduled an installation date and time, the update will install automatically at your specified time.

Microsoft continues to make this business-ready declaration even though it tossed the original multiple-Branch servicing model, and even though Cable today reminded IT personnel that "You no longer need to wait for our signal - deployment control and choice is yours".

To ensure devices in enterprise environments are running the most current and secure version of Windows with the latest security updates, any device on Windows 10 Enterprise edition or Windows 10 Pro edition that is configured to receive updates automatically from Windows Update will be automatically offered Windows 10, version 1709 after January 18, 2018.
