TECH, media and business are prepping to get together in Las Vegas for the huge showcasing of products and businesses at CES 2018. The smart-cities concept has been making the rounds at several tech shows, but what remains unanswered is when it will actually begin happening-and who will pay for it.

A recent study from Juniper Research found that smart speakers such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and the Sonos One will be installed in over 70 million USA households by 2022, reaching 55% of all homes.

Some of those companies have strengths Amazon can't match.

But Amazon is leading the race to make software that can control other machines. They are moving out of smart speakers and will appear in everything from automobiles to microwaves.

And while a few companies like Apple and Fitbit are now dominant in wearable devices, many startups are eager to challenge them with new approaches for tracking fitness and medical issues. It also supports Amazon's Alexa. The devices should be released between April 2017 and April 2018, according to the rules.

As the doors open today on the world's largest electronics trade show, the Consumer Technology Association expects that voice computing, artificial intelligence and connectivity will be the dominant themes.
