Tens of thousands in Southern California went to bed uneasy or not at all late Wednesday as fire officials warned of powerful winds overnight that could whip up a series of wildfires that have already devoured a large swath of the region.

The area battled gridlocked heavy traffic as ash and smoke churned over the smoldering hillside.

Mr Murdoch, who owns British newspapers The Sun and The Times, lives in a mansion on his $30 million Moraga Vineyards estate, dubbed "the only commercial vineyard in Los Angeles".

The Thomas fire has now burned more than 90,000 and forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 homes.

"Very strong winds" blowing from the northeast to the southwest were causing the fire to balloon, he said, warning Angelenos to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.

Santa Ana winds continued to hamper the firefighting effort, with gusts expected to reach up to 80 miles per hour at their peak.

Officials said the strong winds fanning the fires are forecast to last through Saturday, making for extremely unsafe conditions.

The fire was burning in the same general area as the devastating Bel-Air Fire of 1961.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District closed all of its schools Wednesday and Thursday. Six fixed-wing aircraft and a number of helicopters were deployed to the scene, Garcetti said.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said red flag conditions are expected to remain in effect through the rest of the week, with gusting Santa Ana winds presenting a continuing danger of rapidly spreading blazes.

The area was clogged with thick black smoke, forcing mandatory evacuations, road closures and school cancellations.

Los Angeles County declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon due to the Skirball fire in the city's Bel-Air neighborhood.

A stiffening wind blew lines of the Thomas Fire from Ojai toward Santa Barbara County through much of Thursday morning, gusts that picked up flames low on coastal mountain slopes and drove them up and over hills toward several towns along the Pacific Ocean. And when there's a fire, the winds can also transport flames quickly spreading fire from place to place. The closure led to massive congestion on many streets in the San Fernando Valley and in West Los Angeles.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency over the area Tuesday, announcing: "This fire is very unsafe and spreading rapidly".
