Dignity Health merges with Catholic Health Initiatives

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Dignity Health have signed a definitive agreement to merge into a new nonprofit system.

The merger between Englewood, Colorado-based CHI and San Francisco-based Dignity Health will result in a new health system that includes 139 hospitals and 700 care sites and employs about 159,000 people and more than 25,000 doctors and clinicians.

The new organization will also choose a new name at that time and will be headquartered in Chicago.

The combined organization will have 139 hospitals and almost 160,000 employees, including more than 25,000 doctors.

Nationally, CHI CEO Kevin Lofton and Dignity CEO Lloyd Dean will serve as co-CEOs, each with specific and independent responsibilities and decision-making authority.

Catholic Health Initiatives has locations all across the nation - Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. Individual facilities will continue to operate under their existing names, at least for the foreseeable future. "Our new organization will have the talent, depth, breadth, and passion to improve the health of every person and community we serve".

In a prepared statement by the two companies, they stated that the merger would help build a stronger and operational and financial foundation.

The deal is expected to close sometime late next year, pending federal, state and church approvals.
