Ashes 2017: Exciting to play as an allrounder again, says Mitchell Marsh

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie had previously tipped Marsh's recall on the basis that a fourth bowler could be if support for the front-line quicks.

The oft-maligned Marsh has been mostly underwhelming with bat and ball in 21 Tests dating back to 2014.

On the back of some recent Sheffield Shield form for Western Australia - including a knock of 144 - Marsh has been drafted back into the squad ahead of the third Ashes Test in Perth.

Glenn Maxwell will consider himself unlucky, having scored 278 and 96 in successive Shield games for Victoria, but selectors clearly fancy Marsh's pace over Maxwell's spin.

"It's a kick in the butt for Maxwell", Hogg said on SEN radio. I'm here to play and I'm here to do my best for the team.

"[Marsh] has got a Test average of 21". He's played in five first class games and made over 45 twice.

Mitchell Marsh's ability to back-up Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins could see him involved, however, with his elder brother perhaps bumped up the order if Australia's selectors deem Peter Handscomb scratchy form worthy of action. "That's all part of playing Test match cricket, playing cricket at the highest level", he said. I think the biggest thing I've learned is the distractions outside, the media and the scrutiny, that's what happens when you play for Australia but it's all about making sure you focus on what you want and need to do to play well, and that's all that matters.

Australia squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird. "As an allrounder in the Australian team, [and] with our bowling attack, I'm not going to be bowling 30-40 overs a game", he said. "I'm feeling really confident in my game at the moment so it's a great feeling", he said. "But I've worked hard over the last eight months to get my body into a position where I'm now playing again as an allrounder so that's really exciting", he said.
