Snow-Ice warning upgraded to status orange for Donegal

"North and northwest counties will be most at risk, as well as higher ground elsewhere".

The warning will remain in place until 4pm tomorrow.

A less severe snow and ice yellow warning has been issued for other counties further to the south, including Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath and Roscommon.

Up to 3cm of snow over a 24-hour period are possible in parts, weather forecasters have said.

The status orange alert was put into place on Thursday afternoon for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Donegal is set for a cold snap with wintry showers, snow and freezing temperatures which will continue into next week. There may be a light dusting of snow around the country, and it may stick in places in the north and northwest.

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Authority has warned motorists to expect the unexpected with high winds and icy conditions.
