Here's why Meghan Markle probably won't have her friends as bridesmaids

There were rumours that celebrity pals Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra and Sarah Lafferty could be donning bridesmaids dresses for the occasion, but according to Marlene Koenig, a British and European royalty expert, it's unlikely as adult bridal party members are rarely in royal weddings.

Curtseying is a traditional gesture of greeting and an important one in the royal court.

She will only be expected to sometimes curtsey to Sophie, Countess of Wessex - who is a one-time commoner but a royal since 1999 - if her husband Prince Edward is in the room.

It's not down to the order of succession, so it's safe to say Markle has a lot of rules to learn.

What may come as a surprise is that Wilson claims Markle will be expected to curtsey to her sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, and, of course, the Queen.

Her exhausted knees can be relieved when she encounters Princess Anne's daughter, Zara Philips, however, who will be below Markle in the pecking order and is expected to curtsey to her if Harry is in the room. 'It would be unusual for a royal bride to have a woman in her late 30s as a maid or matron of honour.

"Nor before Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips, who despite being a blood royal will still be below Meghan in the pecking order (and expected to curtsey to her if Harry is present)".

As the daughter of the Queen, Princess Anne should receive a curtsey from Markle.

The current rules on who-curtseys-to-who were first drawn up by the Queen's private secretary, in a document in 2005.

The source said, "Harry has several close guy friends, but there's no way he would ask anyone but William to take on the top job".

The Queen's 80-year-old cousin Princess Alexandra should be curtseyed to, but Alexandra's sister-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, should not.

Christopher continued: "If he's got "Prince" in front of his name, she will curtsey". If he doesn't have a title, she won't.

However it may be wise for Markle to try and get her head around the rules, as they're largely still followed in the royal court.
