Google Tez will pass 12 million active users in India within the next couple of days, representing a significant jump over the 7.5 million users it Google CEO Sundar Pichai reported for the app five weeks since its launch on September 18 this year, Caesar Sengupta, VP of Product Management and lead for the Next Billion Users initiative at Google, said at the Google for India event held in New Delhi on Tuesday. The update will come with new features and apps such as Google Go, Files Go and Google Assistant, and will be available to "Oreo devices with 512MB to 1GB of RAM". That's impressive, considering that it's one of the newest apps to support India's Unified Payments Interface, which is a system devised by the government to allow for inter-bank transactions. It can be used where UPI payments are accepted.

In addition, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data suggests that Tez accounted for 70% of all UPI transactions between October and November.

Tez is far from the finished article for Google, however, and the next big step was revealed by Sengupta at the Google For India showcase.

Small businesses are also using Tez to pay suppliers, and transfer money to employees.
