The Creek Fire was reported as a 1,000-acre brush fire at 3:42 a.m. on Tuesday near Gold Creek and Little Tujunga by the Angeles National Forest.

The fire has destroyed at least 30 homes and scorched 11,377 acres, authorities said. That is double the containment figure from Wednesday. "And they were like, 'Get out, get out, get out, '" Patricia Padilla told the newspaper. She and her family were given just enough time to gather some necessities but not their horses, Padilla said.

About 20 of the 30 homes have that burned were in Little Tujunga, Kagel and Lopez canyons, officials said.

Several schools were shut down through Thursday, as well. A full list of closed schools was available at lausd.net.

About 2,500 homes are still under threat and about 900 firefighters are battling the blaze, said Los Angeles County fire inspector Gustavo Medina.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday. He said the usual threshold for extreme fire conditions is 165.

The 210 Freeway was closed in both directions between the Golden State (5) Freeway on the west and the Glendale (2) Freeway. Also, an area south of the 210 Freeway was ordered evacuated in the Shadow Hills area, in a roughly triangular area between Sunland Boulevard to the south, Wentworth Street to the north and Wheatland Avenue to the west.

The fire has spread across 12,605 acres, or almost 20 square miles, since breaking out early Tuesday morning in the area of Kagel Canyon Road, north of Lake View Terrace.

Mandatory evacuations were in place Thursday for the areas north of the 210 Freeway, from Glenoaks Boulevard to Haines Canyon Avenue, as well as south of the 210 Freeway, west of Sunland Boulevard and Stonehurst Avenue, and north of La Tuna Canyon Road.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday evacuation orders were affecting about 150,000 residents, but a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman put the number at around 120,000. Hansen Dam Recreation Area was also being used as an evacuation center for large animals. Once those shelters reached capacity, pet owners were directed to take their large animals to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
