Chance the Rapper surprises CPS students, announces Google's $1M donation

Google teamed up with Chance the Rapper to bring computer science education to Chicago Public Schools.

Chance the Rapper made a surprise appearance at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The rapper said, "Today @Google funded coding classes for 20 schools on the south and west sides". Google officials said the company believes computer science is a critical part of education and helps students and educators develop technical skills for the future.

The proud Chicago native gifted dozens of local high schoolers with early Christmas presents during the most recent of the monthly Open Mike night he hosts through his charity foundation, Social Works. From announcing his plans to donate $1 million to Chicago schools to donating his Grammy Awards to his hometown's museum, Chance continues to give back to his community.

"We're honored to support SocialWorks' mission to help underrepresented students in Chicago reach their full potential, as well as Chicago Public Schools' efforts to turn computer science into a pathway for creative expression", Google.org principal Justin Steele said in a statement.

This prompted Chance to have a simple request, should this happen again.
