A "very poor" AQI comes with the warning that people may develop respiratory illness on prolonged exposure while exposure to "severe" air affects healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.

The PM 2.5 level was four times higher than the permissible limit.

An AQI level between 0-50 is good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor. The AQI level in the capital was recorded in the "severe" zone for seven days between November 7 and November 13. "The cyclone has come as a blessing for Mumbai as it has paved way for clean air". Slow winds have also aided the rise in the AQI score. It has also forecast rain in the next 48 hours that may help improve air quality.

HT had reported, on September 8, that Mumbai's air was more toxic than Delhi in November and December previous year because it had a higher concentration of hazardous particulate matter (PM) than the Capital.

The spurt in pollutants was caused by a combination of meteorological factors including a drop in temperature, wind speed and mixing height, a layer where air and particulates float, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said.

On November 14, Lucknow had earned the dubious distinction of being the most polluted city in the country with AQI of 484. All 10 locations in Mumbai either recorded "good" or "satisfactory" air quality.

However, nine out of Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) 17 stations had "severe" quality. Levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached 276 and 455 micrograms per cubic metre (ug/m3), respectively, in the afternoon.
