Gonzales says doctors told them Murrieta had the flu that turned into pneumonia.

Murrieta was the mother of two young children, a two-year-old and a six-month-old.

Murrieta's aunt, Stephanie Gonzales, said Murrieta took the medicine as it was prescribed and then went back home to take some more rest. The next day, Murrieta's sister chose to take her to an urgent care clinic, where she was diagnosed with the flu.

"They diagnosed them with the flu, sent her home with flu meds", Murrieta's aunt, Stephanie Gonzales, told KSAZ-TV. "I still don't understand how this happened to her so fast - she went from feeling a little sick on Sunday to going to urgent care on Monday and then being gone by Tuesday afternoon", Gonzales told BuzzFeed News of her niece, whom she described as amusing and loud. She explains that after the diagnosis, Murrieta's condition steadily worsened. But on early Tuesday morning, she felt worse and began coughing up blood.

When the doctors checked Murrieta, they found her oxygen levels were low. She was placed on a ventilator but never recovered.

Alani Murrieta, 20, was taken to hospital after having difficulty breathing last Tuesday. Her GoFundMe has raised more than $16,000 of its $18,000 goal since it was set up on November 29, the day after Murrieta's passing. "Never in a million years would we have thought that we would have lost her that day like this".

Gonzales said that the doctors managed to resuscitate her, but as soon as she was moved to the ICU, her heart stopped again.

Gonzales also says Murrieta didn't get the flu shot, however, there is no indication if that would have made a difference or not.

Typically, only young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems or existing health conditions are prone to serious complications from the flu that result in hospitalization or death, according to The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

"I have a son too and it kills me to think the babies won't see their mother", a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page created by Murrieta's cousin to raise funds for her funeral.
