IKEA and Sonos Form Double Act

Cue up the jokes about assembling speakers on your own: Smart speaker maker Sonos and iconic Swedish furniture retailer Ikea announced a new partnership to create "future home sound experiences" Wednesday. It's not yet known what the two companies are planning, but both have huge pedigrees. But we'd hazard a guess they'll involve Sonos speakers integrated into things like table lamps and entertainment units, after all IKEA has already put wireless charging pads into some of its furniture, so adding audio tech into the mix shouldn't be too hard. As part of the latter, Ikea also introduced a smart home hub, which could easily be extended to work with existing as well as upcoming Sonos products.

IKEA has been trying to inch in on the high-tech markets that have begun trickling down to the DIY market, and this is just the third step in that plan.

Research has shown that people who live together and listen to music together spend more time together at home (three hours more per week than people who don't listen to music together). Sound creates meaning and experiences, and it can enhance life at home instantly. First was the launch of its new Sonos One speaker, which comes supporting Alexa out of the box and will launch support for Google Assistant next year.

In the announcement today, IKEA says that it and Sonos "are striving to make it even easier for people to play any song, anywhere in the home, without interrupting the flow of daily life". No specifics on the collaboration have yet been provided by either party, with the two only saying that the products created as part of the project will launch in IKEA stores at some point in 2019.
