New Zealand's new prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, has described how she joked with Donald Trump when they first met, telling the USA president "no one marched when I was elected".

'I pointed out that no-one had marched over my election to office, ' she told Sky News, while laughing about the exchange. But when Trump repeated the jab, she stood up for herself, saying, "You know, no one marched when I was elected".

Ardern spoke to Newsroom about the whole summit experience, which she described as "uncomfortable" and said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had offered her condolences on the death of cat, Paddles.

"He is consistent", Ardern told the newspaper.

According to Ardern, just like any other country, New Zealand has taken a view on the policies that were rolled out by Duterte, especially regarding his drug campaign.

Millions of people from all over the world marched in opposition to the agenda and rhetoric of Trump in the wake of his win, with ABC reporting more than 600 rallies took place in 60 counties across the world when he was inaugurated. "He is the same person that you see behind the scenes as he is in the public or through the media".

During her stay in Manila, the newly elected 37-year-old leader witnessed the signing of a bilateral agreement between New Zealand and Philippines, which capped her one-on-one meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte: the Memorandum of Cooperation on Comparative Analysis of New Zealand and the Philippines Bachelor's Degree.

Ardern also praised Romeo Udanga, a Filipino-born politician who ran under Ardern's Labour party and had sought a seat in Parliament.
