For the first time ever, Barbie will wear a hijab. According to the Barbie-making company, in order to qualify, a woman should have broken boundaries, be an inspiration for women and, of course, played with Barbie dolls when they were young.

As reported by People, Muhammad worked with Mattel every step of the way in the design process and said her resemblance to the doll was uncanny.

Something that she made sure her doll featured was a realistic sense of her body type and her signature eye liner.

"To be included in this conversation is very humbling and I'm over the moon about this whole thing", she added. I hadn't thought about toys.

The one-of-a-kind doll was unveiled at Glamour's Women of the Year Live Summit on Monday by the athlete herself. "It's exciting to be part of the evolution of the brand, and the team was acutely aware of the problems ahead of us".

"We want to highlight women that align with our objective, and inspire youngsters to strive for limitless potential", Miller added. "We are going to continue to evolve".

In 2016, the group released a Barbie created in the image of gymnast Gabby Douglas, the individual all-around champion at the London 2012 Games.

She hopes that this is just the start of more inclusive representation within the doll market and knows who she would like to nominate for a Shero doll next year. The new dolls have been credited with helping revive sales.

In the case of Muhammad, she is an American who isn't forced to wear the covering.

Ibtihaj Muhammad made history in Rio previous year as the first US Olympian to represent her country wearing a hijab, after earlier winning a gold medal in 2014 at the world fencing championships in Russian Federation.

It's true that many women are forced to wear a hijab in certain countries, and I would never endorse such a mandate (I would also not endorse banning the hijab as that is the same limitation on human rights), but it's also true that many women do choose to wear the traditional religious garb.
