Many fans of the Beetle preferred the older generation of those cars when they had engines out back and rear wheel drive.

It's not the only German carmaker to create an electric version of a classic: BMW will launch its electric Mini in 2019.

Diess noted that a Beetle EV would, paradoxically, be "much closer to history", with the company's new electric platform (MEB) being very flexible, and it could return to the rear-wheel drive of the original model.

However, according to commentators, it is hard to imagine VW not coming out with an electric Beetle.

He also added that if an electric successor would be made, it would actually be a throwback to the original rear-wheel drive Beetle.

VW is wise to the emotional power of its iconic past models.

Diess told Autocar that his company is seriously considering development of an electric Beetle and it is not because EVs are being considered as the future of transportation.

Volkswagen hasn't started working on one, but Diess said that the concept of an electric Beetle would be put forward when the company's board votes on ways to expand the company's range of electric cars.

"We have a good chance on the electric side. We can do nice things: rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive", he said. The brand already confirmed the ID hatchback for Europe and it showed the ID Crozz Concept as a potential precursor to an all-electric crossover.
