Modi-Trump meeting under way in Manila

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met US President Donald Trump and a host of leaders soon after arriving in Philippines's capital, Manila for the India-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit.

Official sources said the meeting between Modi and Trump is likely to take place on Monday.

Modi will attend the 15th India-Asean Summit and the 12th East Asia Summit in Manila on Tuesday.

"I would like to assure you that we will come good on the expectations that the world and United States have with India", said Modi to Trump.

"We have exceptionally good political and people-to- people relations with each and every country in the ASEAN region".

The Asean summit opened on Monday, with the member countries - Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - participating in the meetings.

He said, in the last two days the air quality index has shown improvement, which was hovering in the severe zone. Observing that it was an emergency-like situation, the court sought immediate action from the governments.

The ASEAN region along with India together comprises combined population of 1.85 billion people, which is one fourth of the global population and their combined GDP has been estimated at over Dollars 3.8 trillion.

The trade ties between India and ASEAN are on an upswing and both sides want to further boost the trade and investment cooperation.

PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull among others.

"During my first visit to the Philippines, I look forward to have a bilateral meeting with Duterte".

Modi later visited the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Philippines, earlier in the day, and inaugurated the Resilient Rice Field Laboratory, named after him.

The ASEAN Summit is the most important event of the bloc this year with the participation of leaders from 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ASEAN partners to strengthen solidarity, promote the grouping's central role, foster economic growth, narrow the development gap, and improve the ASEAN Community's capacity.
