Lyft confirms Toronto expansion by end of year

It's another move in Lyft's plan to compete with rival Uber, which now is in 77 countries. The company announced it would be launching in Toronto, Canada by the end of this year.

This is a significant expansion not just for Canadians and residents of Toronto, however; Lyft moving into a market outside the USA signals it might now be ready for more ambitious worldwide growth.

Now, Lyft is giving Uber a run for its money.

Lyft is growing beyond its home market of the US, with a launch planned next month in Toronto, the largest city in Canada.

"It depends on where the competition goes", Khosrowshahi said at the New York Times Dealbook conference last week.

According to official data released on Monday, a total of 186,267 Indians were studying in the USA universities in 2016-17. Calling 12 per cent a "phenomenal increase", he added, "It is a high watermark for Indian students coming to the US".

Previously, Lyft operated internationally through partnerships with local ride-sharing companies, like Grab in Southeast Asia and Didi in China. "Right now, we have a situation where Lyft is spending very aggressively to gain share".

Lyft Chief Executive Logan Green has said the San Francisco company plans further worldwide expansion.

Uber already operates in Toronto.

"We'll begin outreach to drivers today and will have additional information on timing in the coming weeks", the company said in a news release.
