Local health professionals encourage getting flu shots now

For the first time, children in school year 4, along with children aged four and over in school years reception, 1, 2 and 3, can get their free flu vaccination, in the form of a nasal spray, in school.

Rhonda Sargent, manager at the Chase County Clinic, said there have been no confirmed influenza cases treated there.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most experts believe that flu viruses are spread mainly by tiny droplets from when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. Of those cases in 2017, there were two deaths.

Dr Al Marzooqi said vaccination was considered to be the best and most effective medical intervention to protect against the flu.

She said the influenza (flu) vaccination was particularly recommended for pregnant women, patients with chronic diseases, the elderly and children under five years as they are more susceptible to complications from the infection. "Children can be super spreaders so getting them vaccinated not only protects them but also those around them".

Deadly shooting in Providence
