Penrith Panthers set to sign James Maloney

NRL.com has been told the deal was finalised on Thursday but still needs to be rubberstamped by the governing body, including a third party arrangement, bringing to end nearly two months of intense speculation over Moylan's future at the club.

It is not believed to be a football issue but Cronulla star Maloney's Kangaroos departure coincided with renewed reports of a player swap with unhappy Penrith playmaker Matt Moylan.

Moylan is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Sharks worth $3.6 million.

NRL.com.au is reporting that Cronulla premiership victor Maloney will join Penrith on a three-year deal worth $800k a season while Moylan moves the other way, signing a four-year deal at $900k a season.

Moylan had been on the outer at Penrith and did not feature in the club's finals campaign after relinquishing the captaincy and taking time away for personal reasons.

Panthers general manager Phil Gould had been trying to keep Moylan at the club, however it became painstakingly clear the skipper wanted out.

Moylan will then join his close childhood mate, Andrew Fifita at the Sharks.

Two time premiership victor Maloney joined the Sharks in 2016 after three seasons with the Roosters.
