Scheifele's parents were in the stands at Bell MTS Place to watch his three goals help propel the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

Jets: After an Esa Lindell giveaway, Dmitry Kulikov slipped the puck to Patrik Laine in the slot, and he spanked in his fifth goal of the season at 13:04 of the first period.

It's important to remember that a strong record in the Central is no guarantee for a playoff berth - as the Jets found out last season when they were 19-8-2 in those games - but failing to rise the occasion in the proverbial four-pointers is a good way to ensure you'll be on the outside looking in come April. "There's lesson to be learned and I'm sure we're going to hear about it when we get back and that's going to be part of the process".

"I think we've been coming out ready to go", said Wheeler. "And we just had too many passengers today".

The Stars didn't get their first shot on goal until 10:12 of the opening period, but then 10 seconds later centre Jason Dickinson was called for holding.

Winnipeg converted on the ensuing power play with Scheifele netting his first of the night on a quick pass to the side of the net from Blake Wheeler at10:58. Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers had the assists and the Jets took a three goal advantage. Laine's fifth goal of the campaign ended a four game goal scoring drought and the Jets took a two goal lead. "I have absolutely no idea why it wasn't a goal", said Jets head coach Paul Maurice.

Winnipeg's power play got a Tyler Myers goal - the eventual game victor - from the blue line at 15:16 for a 3-0 lead.

"It's not what we wanted", Stars defenceman Marc Methot said.

"We played a solid game". We couldn't weather that storm. They seem to be getting a ton of goals for us and we got to be helping them out a lot more. Radulov lifted in the backhand past a sprawled out Hellebuyck. Jamie Benn stepped in to go toe-to-toe with the Winnipeg defender. Connor skated in ever so slow on the penalty shot but he lost control of the puck and didn't even get a shot off. Things would eventually settle in, with the teams exchanging chances throughout the period.

Alexander Radulov and Mattias Janmark scored goals in the loss for the Stars.

Winnipeg shut the door after that, content to simply get the puck clear of their zone and deny Dallas any opportunity to generate any sustained offense.

Kyle Connor was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway with under five minutes left in regulation.

And by depositing an empty-netter with 59.2 seconds left in regulation, Scheifele finished off his second career hat trick (the other was March 5, 2016, against the Canadiens) and put the game on ice. Brandon Tanev fired in a one-timer that gave the Jets a 4-1 lead, but Ben Bishop quickly told the bench he was interfered with.
