Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigns on 'personal grounds'

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, the government's second-most senior legal officer, resigned from the post on Friday. He also cited personal reasons.

Recently, Mukul Rohatgi had written to the government that he was not interested in a second term as attorney general.

Among the cases in which he represented the Gujarat government was the infamous Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. The office of Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad received his resignation letter today.

The Solicitor General of India assists the Attorney General of India in advising the Union Government on matters pertaining to law an law officer, and is himself assisted by several Additional Solicitors General of India.

After the formation of NDA government under the leadership of Narendra Modi in the center, Ranjit Kumar was appointed as a solicitor general for three years in June 2014.

Kumar has cited personal reasons behind the move saying that he now wants to spend more time with his family. After the resignation of Rohatgi, Senior Advocate K Venugopal was appointed the new Attorney General. There was speculation a few months ago that the Supreme Court collegium was considering his name as a judge of the apex court.

Ranjit Kumar, who is well thought-out as an expert in constitutional laws, service related issues, and taxation, has also worked as a lawyer for the Gujarat government.
