The state weather bureau yesterday warned residents in the eastern section of the country against possible flashfloods and landslides as Typhoon Paolo (international name Lan)'s outer bands will continue to bring rains until the weekend.

In a bulletin issued past 4 pm on Thursday, PAGASA said Paolo now has maximum winds of 130 kilometers per hour (km/h) from the previous 120 km/h, and gustiness of up to 160 km/h from the previous 145 km/h.

Paolo is expected to develop into a super typhoon between Friday and Saturday before passing close to Okinawa and mainland Japan, global weather agencies said.

It is forecast to move north-northeast at 17 kph.

Despite its distance, Paolo is expected to induce possible moderate to heavy rains that could trigger "serious flooding" and landslides in the Visayas, Mindanao, the Bicol region and the provinces of Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon.
