India and Pakistan have been placed in Group A of the tournament, alongside Japan and hosts Bangladesh.

India earned a penalty corner in the 21st minute but failed to convert it into a goal.

This sensational win against Japan must have issued a warning to other Pool A participants - Bangladesh and Pakistan - who will be facing India next.

"The opening match of the tournament is always challenging because we need to get over the early nervousness and find our rhythm. The team is upbeat and ready for the first challenge", stated skipper Manpreet Singh on the eve of its first match.

The eight-team tournament will serve as a platform for 2018 World Cup as the victor will directly qualify for the marquee event, which will be held from November 24 in India.

Harmanpreet, who was also part of the Junior World Cup-winning squad a year ago, scored again in the fourth quarter through a 48th-minute PC, where the Indian formation went for a variation played by Varun Kumar and converted by Harmanpreet.
