Tigers upset by Troy 24-21 in final non-conference game

The loss ended LSU's 16-game winning streak on homecoming and the Tigers 49-game winning streak against non-conference opponents in Tiger Stadium is over.

LSU won its first two home games of the season over Chattanooga and Syracuse and added a neutral-site win in New Orleans over BYU, but the Tigers lost 37-7 on the road to Mississippi State.

Troy (4-1) raced to leads of 17-0 and 24-7 before Danny Etling's fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Russell Gage and Foster Moreau got LSU as close as a field goal with 1:59 left.

Troy's 10 successful third-down conversions were the most the Tigers allowed since Texas Tech in 2015.

At the start of the second half, Troy broke out for a 74-yard run to put the Trojans at the 1-yard line. Troy was forced into a fourth-and-goal, but Chunn scored put the Trojans up 17-0.

When Troy fumbled a couple plays later, LSU finally got on the board with a 7-yard touchdown from Myles Brennan to Foster Moreau. Troy would eventually stretch the lead to 24-7 on seven-yard touchdown run by Josh Anderson.

LSU turned the ball over on its first play from scrimmage, when running back Nick Brossette was stripped by Troy safety Cedarious Rookard and fellow defensive back Kris Weatherspoon recovered at the Tigers 30.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Greedy Williams chased down Troy's Jordan Chunn before he ran into the end zone, but the Trojans were still able to score on 4th and one. But officials reviewed the play and determined there should be 2 seconds left. Now this. LSU had seven games left in the season - all SEC games. He rushed for a touchdown to open the third quarter and despite a late fumble, he was the player of the game for the Trojans, giving them the major upset win. Troy is off next weekend and returns to the field on October 11 - a Wednesday - when the Trojans host South Alabama.
