The president continued his attack against the players in tweets over the weekend, including urging fans to boycott National Football League games until the protests end.

Trump brought the issue close to home when he tweeted earlier Wednesday that he had spoken with Jones about the issue.

The NFL, for its part, was not all that eager to continue the back-and-forth with Trump.

Arm-in-arm, they dropped to a knee as a giant flag was carried onto the field, with Mr Jones and his family in the middle near the 50-yard line.

The public address announcer at University of Phoenix Stadium informed the crowd of the Cardinals' plan as it unfolded.

They remained connected as Jordin Sparks sang the national anthem.

"You can not have people disrespecting our national anthem, our flag, our country", Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for a trip to Indiana.

They were joined by owner Michael Bidwell, his family and general manager Steve Keim.
