New Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson demands 'character and desire' against Saints

That result leaves Palace rock bottom of the top flight after five games, and sitting on zero points, zero goals scored and eight goals conceded - the only side since the formation of the Premier League not to have scored in any of their opening five matches.

In the week since his dismissal was confirmed, Palace have replaced De Boer with Roy Hodgson, who was powerless to prevent a fifth consecutive league defeat at home to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers have lost each of their last four League Cup contests against Premier League opponents, however, they were in the second and third tiers at that time.

Next up for them in the league are matches against arguably the division's three best sides.

Despite only taking over on Tuesday, Hodgson has been encouraged by what he has seen of his players so far. "I didn't say I'm a local boy".

Crystal Palace's troubles have been well documented this season, from the 77-day reign of Frank de Boer to the hiring of Roy Hodgson.

Vettel STORMS to POLE at Singapore Grand Prix - Hamilton starts FIFTH
Start is an opportunity, strategy, Safety Car, who knows, but tomorrow we're just going to have to play the long game. Hamilton, who took a record 69th career pole at Monza by a huge margin, never looked in contention.

"We started so badly", recalled Hodgson, speaking to the Daily Mirror. "I regret the fact that it didn't work for Frank as much as it didn't work for the club and I felt we had to make a change".

He might think they need some organisation but I think this could be another negative distraction, but I have no sympathy for Palace at all because of how they behaved.

"I think we've got a lot of work to do before I will feel confident that every player fully understands with his role what I'm looking for and what I want him to do".

"I've obviously been told from the club's point of view that survival's everything, that it would be unthinkable that we go down, and we're going to work during the months ahead to make sure it doesn't happen".

"But it won't be by the end of October, possibly - it might be quite a long way forward".
